Top 5 Social Networking Apps on iOS in Africa for Q3 2023

The third quarter of 2023 saw notable performances from the top 5 social networking apps on iOS in Africa. Data from Sensor Tower reveals interesting trends in weekly downloads, revenue, and active users for these applications.

WhatsApp Messenger experienced a fluctuating yet strong download performance, peaking at around 180K downloads in late July and maintaining high numbers with a slight decline towards the end of the quarter. Weekly active users showed a steady increase from approximately 8.7M to 8.9M. Revenue for the app, however, saw a significant decrease, starting at $63 and dropping to around $4-$5 towards the end of the quarter.

Telegram Messenger also showed impressive trends. Downloads peaked at 150K in the last week of August, with consistent numbers around 70K-100K for most of the quarter. Active users gradually increased from 2.4M to over 2.5M. Revenue exhibited a stable trend, starting at $3.5K and fluctuating around $3K-$4K throughout the quarter.

Threads, despite being a newcomer, showed a strong start with 439K downloads in the first week of July, followed by a decline to around 30K-80K in subsequent weeks. Active users peaked at 440K early in the quarter but saw a decline to around 294K by the end of September.

Facebook maintained a strong presence with weekly downloads increasing from 94K to over 100K by the end of the quarter. Active users steadily increased from approximately 14.2M to 14.5M. Revenue showed a significant rise, peaking at around $13.6K in mid-September.

Messenger saw stable download numbers, ranging from 63K to 83K, with a peak towards the end of September. Active users fluctuated but ended the quarter with an increase from 10.3M to approximately 10.7M.
